Your Bridal Makeup Preview: A Rehearsal for a Calm Wedding Day

Hi, I'm Sana. You have a lot on your mind planning your wedding week. I want your bridal preview to feel like a calm, happy moment just for you. It's more than just a makeup appointment. It's our rehearsal for a smooth, joyful wedding morning.

Think of it as the one part of your wedding you don't have to worry about. We'll figure it all out together.

What is a preview really for?

Your bridal preview is where we make a plan. We do four things at once.

First, we find your look. This is the fun part you came for.

Second, we test that the look will last through a long, happy day of tears, hugs, and dancing.

Third, I quietly time everything. This helps me build a realistic schedule for your wedding morning, so you and your family can relax.

And fourth, we get to know each other. A good connection makes for a calm and easy wedding morning.

When should we schedule your preview?

The best time for a preview is a few months before your main wedding event. By then, your outfits and jewelry are usually chosen. This timing gives us space to perfect your look. A last minute preview doesn't leave room to make changes.

Most weddings I do are a series of beautiful events. We will plan your looks for the Sangeet, Wedding, and Reception all at your preview. We will talk through your hair, your dupatta setting, and everything else you need for your complete bridal service.

What should you bring?

Think of this as a conversation, not a test. A few things help us get started.

A few photos of makeup you love. A handful of photos helps me see what you want. We can talk about what parts you love, and how to make them work for you. We will also talk honestly about what is makeup and what is lighting or photo editing. You can read more about turning a reference into your look.

The most useful photo? One of yourself in makeup you did not like. Telling me why is a great starting point.

A photo of your outfit. A photo from your phone in good light works best. The colors of your lengha or saree bounce onto your skin, and seeing the real shade helps me choose the right tones for you.

Your jewelry. Especially your tikka, earrings, and nath. These pieces sit right where your hair and makeup do. It's best to see how they fit and feel now, while we have time to adjust.

Just one more thing. If you have products you already know and love, feel free to bring them.

How to arrive for your preview

Please come to the studio with a clean, moisturized face. Use the skincare you normally use. This is not the week to try something new.

If you want to try a new skincare product, do it a few months earlier. Dermatologists suggest a simple patch test. Put a small amount on your inner arm for a week or so and see how your skin reacts.³

Tell me about any skin sensitivities you have. Sometimes a reaction is caused by a simple ingredient, like a fragrance.⁴ Knowing your skin's history helps me choose the best products for you.

If you are using strong skincare like retinoids, let me know. They can make skin dry for a little while, but using a good moisturizer can really help.⁵ We can work with any skin, as long as I know what to expect.

We will build your look together

I never do a big reveal at the very end. That's too much pressure.

Instead, I will hand you the mirror often. We will check in after we do your base. After your eyes. After your lips. This way, we can make small changes as we go.

The most helpful thing you can say is, "I'm not sure I like this." Please, say it early. You will never hurt my feelings. I want you to feel completely happy.

You are welcome to bring one person with you. Your mom, your sister, or a friend whose opinion you trust. More than one guest can get confusing, and I want to hear your voice most of all.

We will take our time with color. Your foundation needs to look perfect in daylight, in the banquet hall, and in your photographer's flash.¹ I match your foundation to your jaw, neck, and chest to get a seamless match. We will also decide on airbrush or traditional makeup based on your skin and your wedding week.

The wear test: Your job after the preview

Your preview makeup needs to live a little. Don't just go home and sit perfectly still.

Talk on the phone. Eat a meal. Have a laugh. Your makeup needs to last through a real day, not just a photoshoot.

Lashes get their test at the preview too. It's rare, but some people are sensitive to lash glue.^{6, 7} It is much better to find that out months before your wedding, not on the morning of.

Let's take some photos

Before you leave my studio, we will take a few pictures on your phone.

One set by the window, in natural light. One set with the flash on. And one from a few feet away, which is how your photographer will see you.

Then, hours later, take another set of photos. See how the makeup has settled. This is the most important test.

Send the photos to me. Don't stare at them alone at midnight, wondering if your concealer looks right. Text me the pictures and tell me what you think. We are a team. We will figure it out together.

Your look, all written down

After your preview, I create a personal file for you. It has everything. Every product name, every brush, the final photos, and our notes. I share it with you, so you have it too.

For a wedding with many events, this file is our map. Your Reception look builds on what we learned at your Sangeet. It is how I promise you a calm, organized wedding morning.

Questions you should ask any makeup artist

Please ask me anything. But especially, ask these things.

• How do you keep your kit and brushes clean?
• Who will be with me on my wedding morning?
• How do you create the schedule for my family and bridesmaids?
• What is your plan if things run a little late?

You should feel confident about hygiene. A clean kit is something you can see. I use disposable wands for mascara and lips. I decant products. I clean my hands and brushes constantly. It is how I keep you and your family safe. Poorly handled makeup can easily pick up germs.⁸

And if a preview does not feel right, it is okay to say so. Sometimes it just means we need a quick second preview to make an adjustment. Sometimes it means I am not the right artist for you, and I can help you find someone who is. Your happiness is more important than anything.

One last thought

Before we even meet, try this. Write down three things about your face that you love. Three things that make you feel like you. Bring that little list. It is the best inspiration you can give me.
